Because the two communities are small, Plainview and Old Bethpage share one school system. There was a time when each of the hamlets had their own schools, however, in the early 20th century, it was determined that the systems could be combined into the Plainview Old Bethpage Schools district in order to make the most use of available funding.
There are a total of eight schools in the district. These schools include the Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School. This is the only high school in the area, and it is located in Plainview proper. Among the other shared Plainview schools include the Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School and the Howard B. Mattlin Middle School. There are a total of four elementary schools, and of the four, only one is located in Old Bethpage. These elementary schools include Stratford Road Elementary, Parkway Elementary, Old Bethpage Grade School, and Pasadena Elementary.
Plainview and Old Bethpage schools also include a primary school, called the Plainview-Old Bethpage Kindergarten Center, and it is also located in Plainview proper. This primary school offers kindergarten classes only, and the other schools serve for grades first through twelfth.
Because the two communities do have a long history, both dating back to the earliest times in American history, they were home to rustic on-room schools for many years. In addition, until the late 1960’s there were two high schools in the area, two separate school districts, and numerous early grades schools. The two school districts began a merger process in 1966.
While the two towns may be considered hamlets for their small size, they do put a great emphasis on education with the combined school district offering eight different education centers in order to ensure all youth have the chance to receive the education that they need while growing up in Nassau County.
