Plainview, located in Nassau County, shares many of its offices, recreation options, and schools with its sister community. This sister community, located adjacent to Plainview, is Old Bethpage. If you will be visiting the area, you will want to be sure to visit both communities.
The two communities, referred to as Hamlets by the state of New York, share all law enforcement, emergency services, municipalities and school districts. This means that, while they are two separate communities, the two towns share a kinship of history and culture.
The name for Bethpage was chosen because of its location. Because there were already towns nearby on Long Island named Jerusalem and Jericho, the settler of the town named it after the Biblical location, Bethphage. Because it was a stop on the railroad lines that ran through New York, Old Bethpage soon became an established town not long after settlement.
While Old Bethpage may share much with Plainview, it has many attractions of its own, including several city parks. In addition, since the early 1960’s a complete working restored village has been located in the town for visitors who wish to step in the past. The working historic town includes real shops like a blacksmith’s, a cobbler’s and even a mercantile.
Old Bethpage is also home to several museums, a playhouse, and a shopping center. Whether visiting or relocating to the area, you will find that there is plenty to see and do in the community.
When visiting Nassau County and Plainview, NY, be sure to visit Old Bethpage as well. These two little towns, situated just miles away from the bright lights of New York City, share a common interest and a rich history. From its working 19th century village to its modern shopping centers, Old Bethpage has much to offer both the visitor and the resident.
