A Piece of the Gold Coast

During the early 20th century, the people of the United States went through a period often referred to as the Gilded Age. During this time period, business was booming and many millionaires were made. Many of these millionaires made their money through such industry as the railroad, steel and oil. Often referred to as tycoons or magnates, these men enjoyed a great deal of prosperity.

During this time frame, many of the magnates chose to build elaborate manors along the shore of Long Island. While the gilded age has long past, the manors still remain. Many of them are open for public viewing.

Plainview, a small hamlet in Nassau County, is the home to two of these manors, providing the community with a piece of the gold coast. If you will be visiting Plainview, be sure to view these two manors and get a feel how the tycoons of the gilded age once lived.

The first of these manors is the Schwarzenbach Estate. This manor was built by a man of the same name who had made his money in the textile industry during the gilded age. While the main manor house was long ago destroyed, certain parts of it remain and are of viewing Interest.

The second manor is the Shattuck Estate. This manor was built by a Lawyer who was also a member of a family of a successful restaurant chain. This estate and manor is still standing because it was purchased and preserved by Nassau County in the mid 20th century. At this time, the estate was turned into a preserve at the time of purchase.

When you visit Plainview, be sure to take the time to view the community’s piece of America’s gold coast by viewing these two estates from the gilded age of the United States.
